California Senior Legal Hotline - Legal Services of Northern California
Due to funding losses, California Senior Legal Hotline (SLH) has had to suspend its core function of providing free legal advice by phone on any subject to California residents over 60. This now applies for Sacramento County residents only. Others can call regarding certain funded projects: Housing counseling, including advice about foreclosures and reverse mortgages; assistance with pension issues; help with CalFresh (formerly food stamps) eligibility and enrollment; and help on a broad range of issues for victims of domestic violence. Written materials and some additional advocacy may be provided, and clients who need more extensive assistance are referred to an appropriate legal services program, or other source. A mediation program can help resolve some disputes (one party must be a Sacramento resident). Regular phone hours are 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. M-F, and until 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Most service is by call-back appointment. Seniors can also submit questions from the web site, www.seniorlegalhotline.org, and receive a phone appointment with an SLH advocate. The office also administers Sacramento Senior Legal Services, which offers additional help for local clients. Please see also the separate listing for the Western States Pension Assistance Project, another program of SLH.
